Ballina PS Eco Warriors

The Eco Warriors have hit the ground running this Term with the implementation of the '3 bin recycling system' in the classrooms and playground.

At the beginning of the Term "The GreenHouse" visited our school.  They showed us hwo and why we must recycle and how to resuse many of the things we throw away.  We learnt a new word "leachate".  Leachate is rain or water runoff that seeps its way through landfill, picking up all sorts of nasties along the way.  Leachate must be stopped and pumped out of the ground before it reaches the ground water or it may poison it.  If we reduce the amount of landfill, the amount of leachate will reduce.

At Ballina PS we are recycling not just paper and cardboard, but also plastics, tin and organic waste.  The Eco Warriors have been monitoring their classmates recycling skills and we are trying hard to use the correct bins.

Our next project is to weed and fertilise Jenny's garden.  We will use the seed from our existing flowers to grow new flowers ready for next spring.

Recently our friendly P&C organised a working bee to clean up the vegie garden, ready for new crops. They did a fabulous job and the garden beds are now ready for planting.  We hope to plant the seeds soon and look forward to some healthy winter vegies for the canteen to use and the Eco Warriors to sell at assembly to raise funds for worthy causes.

If you have any seeds, mulch, fertliser or gardening paraphernalia you would like to donate to the school, all would be greatly appreciated.

Keep recycling or reusing what you can!

Cooooeeee!
